DEVELOPING CHILDREN'S THINKING

I am thinking of sending some teachers on CAME training - which teachers should I send?

Because of the collaborative nature of the professional development course, we recommend that schools send two members of staff, where possible in the same Key Stage. This enables the professional conversation to continue inside the school, as teachers share their thoughts on the lessons they have tried.

There is no typical profile of a CAME teacher - course participants range in levels of experience from NQTs to Local Authority Numeracy Consultants. However, the surest guarantee of impact for the training is the commitment of the participant. Where teachers are enthusiastic to learn about the CAME approach, this often leads to a whole-school impact as they discuss the approach with colleagues, model the lessons in their classrooms and those of others, and even team teach with members of staff who are not lucky enough to participate in courses. (For examples of whole school impact like this, visit our CA Stories section.)

Tutors report the courses having a significant impact on teachers who are capable teachers, but are not personally mathematically confident. Maths specialists also enjoy the course for its focus on underpinning mathematical concepts, and the overview of the Maths curriculum (often well beyond their specialist Key Stage).
